Dressed for Success

Here, incendiary remarks freely intertwine with liberal obscenity to weave tapestries of offensive material the Gameforms Project can not be held responsible for. Indeed. Consider yourself duly warned.

Me and some guys are trying to get our friend Reid on a bottle of soda. We’d appreciate if you vote for him, preferably with 10s.

Not a lot has been happening gaming wise. “Everquest 2” is apparently not going to have player killing which goes against a major concept I think all MMORPGs need to remain exciting. Oh well… I’ve been playing a lot of “Advance Wars 2,” which is possiblt my favorite strategy game in the whole wide world, yes even above Disgaea. I still don’t know what the hell is up with that real time Advance Wars game those crazy British are making. It looks absolutely terrible. Even if it is a good game it really ruins the spirit of the franchise. This isn’t like how the 2D Metroids went to Metroid Prime. This is like if Metroid Prime starred a giant mechanical monkey and space pirates fought with dance. It’s a completely different game.

Today’s topic is game costumes. The best dressed of the video game world who inspire cosplayers to go out and dress themselves in ridiculous outfits. So, which characters dress for success? Who has the most bad-ass cape? The tightest pants? Let’s find out.

Creepy Yaoi Snuggling

I really think this is a great topic, and believe that the costume design in many games is fabulous. Unfortunately, you don't see many topics about them, thank you for filling this gap.

Let me be the first to say that the best dressed man in a videogame ever, is chaos from Xenosaga. He has hotpants, but not just any, they are super space-age short-shorts which strike fear into the salty heart of every gnosis around!

Overall, however, I think I have to say that the costumes in Suikoden are the best I've seen in any videogame. Not only are most of them unique and detailed, but there are 108 of them. That's just my own two cents.

- Ishootspammers

chaos is indeed rocking the hot pants, but in reality his outfit looks pretty abysmal. The tacky orange and blue color scheme doesn’t really go with his white hair and scary green eyes. And what the hell is up with the goddamn bulge in his pants? It’s downright wrong.

In the future, everyone will wear really tight pants. And there’s nothing we can do to stop it…

Anyhow, it is absolutely amazing that the costume designs for the Suikoden characters are all unique in their own way. I mean, you think you’d run out of ideas eventually, but no! They just keep coming up with more and more ideas! We’ll give this guy some arm gauntlets! And that guy’ll have a scarf! We need more accessories damnit!

It’s really is amazing when you figure that’s 324 different characters they’ve designed so far. And those loose silky tunics really make for some hardcore yaoi snuggling (Don’t click if you value your eyes in any way).

Guy in Red Coak #25

I <3 Kilik's regular outfit in Soul Calibur. Because he's sexy and shirtless! I hate what they did to him in Soul Calibur 2! Not only did they make him a bad fighter, they put stuff over that sexy body of his!

~Shrubey

Kilik sure does rock the shirtless style pretty well, but I was always more partial to Kilik’s yellow outfit, I don’t know why. I always thought it made him kind of look like Squall from FVIII. But I agree that his new cloak thing in SC2 just isn’t as cool as his old outfits. I mean, he still looks pretty cool, but he doesn’t look as original now. He’s just guy in red cloak #25. He didn't even get a 3P outfit...

Random Thought of the Day: I have a Kilik t-shirt I never wear… I got it for like $10 at a flea market.

Red Mage is Big Pimpin'

I think special recognition most go out for the overall stylin' ensemble worn by your typical FF Red Mage: those super-deformed lil' bastards are *BIG PIMPIN*, baby. Nobody else gets hair extensions, big fuggin' hats with feathers on them, or long flowing capes, and they're all a dye-job away from being Hugh Jackman's Van Helsing. Which, you know, must mean something next to Meg Ryan's role as Tidus. :P

I'll also keep a light on for DMC1's Dante--who's a feathered hat away from being a FF Red Mage/Pimp himself--and for Link and the First Lady of Gaming Herself, Miss Samus Aran: in a roster of characters dominated by fugly big-nosed plumbers, fugly big-nosed little garden-critters, and fruity pilot-foxes, the lone little elven swordsman/Hyrulian Secret Service agent/gardener known as Link and Samus's Chozo power Suit are a welcome dose of timelessly designed fresh air.

Oh, Hell, and I forgot Hotsuma from PS2's Shinobi...ph34r the sc4rf.

Peace.

-The Absu-

The red mages have always been the complete pimps of the Final Fantasy world. I mean, fighters and black belts are nice but they just don’t have any class when it comes to looking stylish. The red mage kicks some ass yet still keeps his crimson cloak velvety smooth for the ladies

Dante really does look completely bad-ass. I mean, the formula for making a bad-ass character is pretty simple these days. Take one well-toned late teen to young adult, add a long flowing cape or jacket – perhaps a scarf, maybe throw in a nice pair of tight pants and a fancy belt or something, add some leather boots, use a lot of red, black and white for the color scheme, and then make sure the hair waves in the breeze just right. Extra points are added for things like white hair and unbelievably overpowered weapons. I don’t know about Dante’s new shirtless look for DMC3 though. He looks like an over the hill rock star, like “I’m still sexy! Look at my chest! Please?”

Anyway, Link has also always looked cool. I’ve always coveted his cool outfit, back since when I first saw him looking all angsty in the Adventure of Link instruction booklet. But his new look defines awesome. It’s so hard to rock the green right but he does it so nicely. I really think he needs get a new hat though. The one he has now makes him look like a lawn gnome. Also, Samus’s power suit is still the coolest battle suit ever. The red and orange colors look perfect, and those gigantic shoulders of doom strike fear into the hearts of all space pirates everywhere. Best of all, the whole thing turns into a ball for easy storage. How cool is that?!

And I think all Ninjas should have to wear a red scarf. It’s just so badass.

Chris Hates Randomly Generated Dungeons

Chris,

Best outfit? Again, I'm going to have to go with Monica's leopard bikini in Dark Cloud 2. Practical (at least in the lava dungeons) yet alluring!

lower case dave

I think that outfit made the plodding randomly generated dungeons all the more bearable.

Damn Ninjas

The White Stealth Ninja Dragon Retard got it all wrong! "Off course" was not from FFT, but from FF7 in the fighting arena. FF7 had the much worse "This guy are sick."

I say we whip him as punishment.

Thanks for the heads-up Imran. I don’t think you need to worry about the whipping though. I already burnt his lord’s castle to the ground and pissed on the ashes.

Take that you ninja bastard.

Best Letter Ever

Mr. Chris Gesualdi,

Firstly, please excuse my use of html in an email. I know this is a grievous sin, but I wanted to put links in here without taking up huge amounts of space.

Best dressed game character? Hm... hard to say. Well, lemme split itup by gender. That may make deciding a little bit easier. Now, the best dressed male character I can think of is pretty easily Guido Kandori from Persona 2. It's a nice suit, and it matches his scars. Though Katsuya Suou from the same game is also pretty smartly dressed.

For females it's a bit harder to decide--women are generally more fun to look at than men. Akiha Tohno from Tsukihime and Melty Blood has some pretty nice fashion sense. The shirt, the hair, and most of all, the skirt--all
very classy. On the flip side, 'Executor' Ciel, from the same game(s), is also pretty darn cool. And I can't foget about Ulala Serizawa of P2. Or Ivy from Soul Calibur. Note that this is her nifty 2p outfit, not her ridiculous dominatrix getup. And no, her Soul Calibur 2 incarnation just isn't as good. ...I think it's the hair.

Yep, I think I'd have to give it to the 2nd player outfit of Isabella Valentine from Soul Calibur for best dressed video game character... though most of the cast of Persona 2 gets an honorable mention.

yours,
Graham Johnson

Wow, this is called being a good letter writer. See how Graham actually took time to find examples, host them on his own server and do all the HTML work for me? Graham Johnson, if I wasn’t so sure you were a figment of my imagination I would quite possibly make love to you. Then I’d steal your stereo while you slept. It’s just what I do.

Now, Persona 2 had some goddamn crazy character design. The first two men you showed us, Guido and Katsuya, look like rejects from some 70s spy movie. Nice clothes guys, I’m sure you’d fit in well at the local fondue party, but get the hell out of my horror RPG. 20 points for mentioning “Melty Blood” by the way. An awesome doujin fighting game with a weird engrishy name. I do love the character designs though, but you really have to give credit to the digital novel Tsukihime where the characters came from.

As for Ivy… all of her outfits are honestly ridiculous dominatrix get-ups, but I guess her 2P version doesn’t scare me as much as the other two. Seriously though, Persona 2 has some absolutely crazy costume design. I wouldn’t call it “good” as much as I would call it “interesting.” But I guess it fits the game’s whole “this doesn’t make any goddamn sense” atmosphere perfectly.

Ivy Scares Me

Yo yo yo Gesual-D!!!

The best dressed character evah is IVY from Soul Caliber 2. *foaming* Best hairstyle award goes to Robin of WHR.

Crazytalkx- "I FEEL ASLEEP"

I really hope you aren’t referring to Ivy’s ridiculous old English style outfit. I can understand liking her little revealing type get up, but when she started dressing like a guy in SC2 I started questioning my sexuality. I’m convinced some programmer at Namco is living out his crazy sexual fantasies through the various outfits he designs for Ivy. What a guy.

And I don’t watch Witch Hunter Robin because it’s one of those animes that tries to force me to think. And it requires I know all this stupid roman mythology before I even try to tackle the concepts it throws at me. I mean c’mon, they fight witches with really fancy paintball guns, stop getting so philosophical.

Goddamn Sasami

I'm pretty sure that the cause of the excessive "you know"ing in FFX is due to the english voice actors attempting to match the lip flap of the original Japanese dialogue. If you've ever taken any Japanese language courses you'll recall that the rhythm of conversational Japanese is filled with end-of-the-sentence modifiers such as Desu ka, Ne or Yo (If you haven't taken any Japanese language courses you'll have to take my word for it). As is common with some english dubbed anime, this lip flap at the end of sentences is filled with the generic "you know".

I seem to recall hearing that some portions of FFX were reanimated during the localization to match the english voice acting, but due to time and cost restraints this was not implemented throughout the entire game. I bet that if you come across a portion of dialogue that seems to match the lip flap, you'll notice the absence of the dreaded placeholder "you know".

For my money, I'll take the overused "you know" from Final Fantasy X if it means that we don't get the horrible synch problems from the animated sequences in Xenogears.

Bryce

I’ve taken some Japanese and I’m aware of their various sentence modifiers which only serve to confuse the hell out of me. I guess it was better than Xenosaga’s approach of “Well, if their mouths move while talking happens nobody will notice a thing, right?”

Why did it take them like two years to translate that game? They obviously didn’t spend it on re-animating the lip-synching. Lazy bastards.

And for the love of god can there be a little girl character who isn’t voiced by the insufferable Sherry Lynn? When I first heard Momo’s voice I screamed “Oh god no! It’s Sasami!” and ran to my room to cry.

In conclusion, the best outfits share many common elements. Tight pants, fancy capes, maybe some skin as fan service. Also, Link needs a new hat, ninjas should all wear red scarves and how the hell do they design 108 characters for each of the Suikoden games? Those guys at Konami are nuts.

Tomorrow's topic is best weapons in a videogame. Most every game features a weapon of some sort, be it a giant sword, giant gun, or in the case of DOA, giant boobs. So what weapon is the best? Was it Wakka's clever use of sports equipment? Dante's magic twin guns that never run out of ammo because they're magic? Ivy's "oh my god how does it do that" sword whip thingy? Tell me your favorites at letters@gameforms.com and let me know what weapons had you going "HOLY CRAP THAT THING IS SO COOL."

This was Chris Gesualdi, who still can't get over how shiny the PSP is. If I lived near Sony I'd have broken in and stolen the prototype by now.
