Drop The Hammer
Chris Gesualdi - 08-05-04

Disclaimer: The opinions expressed within this column are those of its moderator and contributors. Here, incendiary remarks freely intertwine with liberal obscenity to weave tapestries of offensive material the Gameforms Project can not be held responsible for. I don't know. Consider yourself duly warned.

This was supposed to go up on Tuesday but I forgot to press the "Post It Now" button before going to sleep, and by the time I realized my mistake contractors were already hard at work disabling the power source my router plugs into. Sorry.

I had four of my teeth painfully ripped from my skull on Sunday, so it’s been hard to feel motivated to write when my day is comprised of terrible blinding pain and passing out from pain medication. It’s really hard to eat when you have a big hole in the side of your mouth, because then a tortilla chip gets stuck down there and cuts through the exposed gum causing more pain and a healthy amount of blood.

So yeah, my mouth hurts a lot.

I finally beat The Wind Waker yesterday after breaking down and checking an FAQ for information on how to get aboard the ghost ship. I still don’t know what I think about the ending, it was kind of confusing what was happening. But, I felt content.

I don’t know, as much as that new Zelda game looks “off the hook,” I think I might actually prefer another Wind Waker.

In other news, Sega is making Shenmue Online. In other news, Sega is goddamn insane. What’s going to happen, we’re going to have thousands of online gamers avenging their fathers and buying capsule toys? It’ll be interesting if it works.

Anyhow, Len Cannon has something brilliant to say again.

Thanks Len

Wow, dawg. Way to tear up the internet. So, your last update had all of three letters answered. I can see how you don't have the time to play any games. I guess Final Fantasy VI had to take a backseat to a page and half of "hilarious" muffin antics. Oh, IRC! Won't you ever stop giving to the American people? Your wit truly knows no bounds.

Keep up the good work at being almost famous on the internet.

Your friend at the end,

Len Cannon

PS: LOL MUFFIN LOL

For someone who claims to hate me you really do seem to enjoy reading the column on a regular basis.

I’m sorry your car got broken into and you needed to vent your anger over losing your copy of “House of Leaves.” But you don’t have to be a complete asshat about it and send angry letters to people you’ve never met, berating them for doing a job you could do no better yourself.

Feel free to post about this on your livejournal with a stupid sarcastic comment and pretend you’ve won some imaginary battle. You obviously have some sort of strange notion that acting like a complete ass somehow makes you a better person.

Keep up the good work.

Either Way She's Hot

isn't is a little scary to thik that as of march third [i believe], chun-li is 36 years old? i was just thnking about her panties and remembered that she's seven days and ten years older than meO_o

SEVEN DAYS...

the book was SO much better...

it's a real shame that we'll never get shinseiki evangelion 2. or the shinji raising games. now THOSE have to be worth the price of admission! Completely change an established character however ya want... might be able to give the little freak a backbone^_^;

yes, i am making a little sense right now. Apparently when i get sick, so do the brain-faeries. LISTEN TO THEM!! crying their little asexual hearts out! what's wrong? DOES IT HURT!?! now you know what being mortal is all about!!

BEHOLD!! i shave my own ass without a mirror!!

-tinky.

Yeah… Chun Li is officially middle aged now. It’s hard to decide if she’s sexier as a young woman or as a mature older woman. Though I think we all can agree that this is creepy.

I want one of those masks.

Anyhow, I always wanted to play that Evangelion dating game, it looked interesting. Gainax really knows how to take their own franchises and bastardize the hell out of them with things like strip mahjongg games. I never understood the concept of ruining your own characters for a quick buck, but hey, it’s Japan. If they want to get Rei all naked I’m not complaining.

Demikids blows

> This was Chris Gesualdi, who really should get started on FFVI...

Yes!

> then again it's probably getting ported to PSP, maybe I should wait...

No!

You may be right, FFVI might be ported, but I don't think it will be the
PSP. According to the-magicbox.com:

Square Enix is conducting a survey on what games the players would like
to see on Nintendo DS, a postcard is included in the package of Final
Fantasy I & II Advance for GameBoy Advance, the list of choices include:
Final Fantasy III, IV, V, VI; Chrono Trigger, SaGa series, Front
Mission, Hanjuku Eiyuu, Chocobo Dungeons and Seiken Densetsu.

And:

Atlus announced 5 new titles for Nintendo DS, among them:

Shin Megami Tensei DS (RPG)

Now breath deep and calm, think of how bad a PSP will look when ist
screen is all scratchy because it can't be folded inward like the DS'
can... and then come to the dark side. ;)

Feeling 15 yrs. younger and returning to 12 yr. old fanboyism

I hope that SMT DS game is more like Persona and less like that lame Pokemon clone Demikids. I bought that expecting a fun monster raising experience and got stuck with some lame combat and a terrible plot. $10 down the drain I guess. Persona was a brilliant game though, so I’m looking forward to Digital Devil Saga and all that.

Honestly though, I’m almost sick of ports at this point. Granted, reliving classics portably is great, but the lack of new original titles is killing me.

There’s still no new Mario game on GBA…

And I think the PSP might have one of those LCDs that doesn’t scratch. Still, it’s good to know Nintendo is addressing the flaws of the GBA. And there’s finally the right amount of buttons! Yay!

I Have Trouble With Commitments

Don’t feel bad about just now going through FFVI. I had developed some kind of complex about finishing games. Final Fantasy X, Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, Dragon Warrior VII...I get to the very end (or close to) of each game, then just stop. It was really bad with Xenogears.

Have you ever played Xenogears? It's so friggin' plot heavy it's impossible to play, then put down for an extended period and pick up again. My first go-through was maybe 12 hours. Two years later I started over and made 33 hours' progress.

Now, after finally going through Suikoden III (another game I had quit playing), I think I possess the discipline to give Xenogears another shot. I've surpassed my previous progress. I think Xeno and I are gonna be really happy together. If we can make it work, I think you and Terra can find happiness too. You kids have fun! We'll keep you in our thoughts if you keep us in yours. You know, like a support group.

I have a problem of jumping around on games. I get really discouraged when I die. There’s several games where I’ve gotten stuck on a particularly hard section or boss and just put it back on the shelf for a few months. The problem with doing that with RPGs is that I sometimes lose track of the storyline. It’s just discouraging to spend an hour fighting through a difficult part of Metroid Prime, and die before getting a chance to save.

More games need save anywhere systems like Wind Waker. It honestly doesn’t hurt anything.

I’ve gotten started on FFVI, I just haven’t felt like finishing it up yet. I want to, it’s just hard lately. I’ve been trying to spend more time with friends and less time with games. I don’t want to waste my summer alone, ya’know?

Tomrrow’s topic is game series you’d like to see made into an MMORPG. I’m not too sure how Shenmue will work out, but there’s plenty of other popular game series that might work well as a community based multiplayer RPG. So what game would it be and how would the game work? E-mail me at chris@gameforms.com. OW MY MOUTH.

This was Chris Gesualdi, who is still cool.
